Ingredients

For the corn dogs:
  • ¾ cup fine corn meal
  • ¾ cup organic unbleached flour
  • ¾ cup non-dairy milk of your choice
  • 2 ½ Tbsp. organic fine sugar
  • 2 tsp. baking powder
  • ¼ tsp. Himalayan salt
  • ¼ cup of vegan Guinness
  • 1 eggs worth of Earth Island egg replacer (follow package instructions)
  • 1 pkg GUSTA Smoked Onions or Smoked Spices or Italiana sausages (or the 3 of them!!) cut into thirds
  • Wooden skewers
  • Frying oil of choice
For the BBQ sauce:
  • 1 can of tomato paste (156ml)
  • 3 Tbsp. apple cider vinegar
  • 1 Tbsp. brown sugar
  • 1 Tbsp. vegan Worcestershire
  • 1 Tbsp. mustard
  • ½ tsp. pepper
  • ½ tsp. smoked paprika
  • ½ tsp. onion powder
  • ½ tsp. garlic powder
  • ½ teaspoon chili powder
  • 1/3 cup water
For the mapple mustard sauce:
  • ¼ cup vegan mayonnaise
  • 1 Tbsp. Dijon mustard
  • 1 Tbsp. maple syrup
  • 2 tsp. fresh lime juice

Prep

  1. Prepare the sauces:
    1. BBQ sauce: In a saucepan over low heat, mix in all ingredients while stirring frequently, for approximately 5 minutes.
    2. Maple mustard sauce: Whisk together all ingredients in small bowl.
  2. In a large mixing bowl, combine, cornmeal, flour, milk of choice, sugar, baking powder, salt, Guinness, egg replacer and whisk till batter is thick and homogenous.
  3. CAUTION: Make sure that your oil doesn’t fill your pot more than 2/3 of the way. During the frying process it is very important that you do not let your oil drip onto your heating element. Heat your oil to 375F degrees in a deep pot over medium heat.
  4. While your oil is heating up, pour your batter into a tall glass, and dust some flour on a dinner plate. Skewer the sausages and roll in the flour then dip the sausage in the tall glass of batter. Your batter should stick to your sausage and cover it entirely. If it doesn’t, add a few more tablespoons of flour.
  5. Place a plate lined with paper towels next to your heated pot of oil.
  6. To make sure you oil is hot enough, put a small drop of batter into oil, this should make it sizzle if it is ready. Fry 1 corn dogs at a time until lightly browned, about 3-5 minutes each. To make sure no oil drips onto your heating element, while removing your corn dog from the oil, use a paper towel.
  7. Garnish with pickles
